What a klotok trip actually feels like
The klotok is a two-deck wooden boat with a crew of three or four: a captain, a cook, a deckhand and a licensed guide. The lower deck holds the engine, the galley and a small bathroom. The upper deck is the whole hotel: by day it is a lounge with a table and chairs, at night the crew lays mattresses and mosquito nets on it. You watch the river from where you sleep.
The river changes as you go upstream. Near Kumai it is wide and brown with nipa palms on the banks. At the Sekonyer junction the water turns black, stained by tannins from the peat forest, and so still it mirrors the trees. Each day is built around the feeding stations. Rangers bring bananas and milk to a wooden platform in the forest at roughly the same hour each day Source: consistent. Some orangutans come, some do not; in fruiting season the forest feeds them and the platforms can be quiet. That uncertainty is part of what makes it real.

Questions travellers ask
How many days do you need for a klotok tour?
Three days and two nights is the most common length because it reaches all three feeding stations, including Camp Leakey, without rushing. Two days works if you land early; four days adds a slower pace and a forest walk.
Will I definitely see orangutans?
Nobody can promise it. Most visitors see orangutans at the feeding platforms, but in fruiting season fewer come because the forest already feeds them.
Is a klotok tour suitable for children?
Many families do it. The deck has railings but no enclosed cabins, so children need constant supervision near the edge, and you should ask the operator about life jackets in child sizes.
Do I need to book in advance?
In July, August and around Christmas, yes, ideally weeks ahead. In quieter months boats are often available a few days before.
